History

The location of the Sunloft Center has an immense history.

Throughout its history, the city of Punta Gorda has faced many hardships, yet it has set a new standard on recovery with a harmonious mix of historic preservation and contemporary advancements. Among these improvements is the striking multi-story Sunloft Center, perched in the heart of downtown.

1884 - 1950’s

Founded in 1884, Punta Gorda started as a small fishing village.

In 1887, Dade, one of Punta Gorda’s first hotels, was built on the Sunloft land. In 1917, Teddy Roosevelt even stayed at this location. The hotel went through many name changes, including the Charlotte Bay Hotel and the Princess Hotel.

It didn’t take long for the town’s captivating beauty and delightful weather to draw visitors from all around.
The city’s quaint and welcoming feel quickly turned these visitors into residents, leading to a boom in the late 1950s.
Punta Gorda continued to develop to bring progress and opportunities to the area.

1975

A fire burned down the beautiful and historic building that stood on the Sunloft land for nearly 100 years. This led to the construction of the Professional Center,

2004

Hurricane Charley devastated much of Charlotte County and Punta Gorda in 2004, yet Punta Gorda did not dispair – it came back stronger than ever.

2009

The destroyed old Professional Center downtown is replaced by the Sunloft Center, in hopes of rebuilding the community by creating a new hub where people can live, work, dine, and come together.
